Whitney Bailey Whitney is the Director of Stewardship & Adventures in Conservation for the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust. Her work at NVCT includes documenting ecological characteristics of conserved properties, developing land management plans, conducting environmental restoration projects such as tree plantings and invasive species removals, and leading kayak trips for the public with a focus on natural history. She received her Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development and Conservation Biology from the University of Maryland in December 2004 and has taken classes since then with the USDA Graduate School towards a certificate in Natural History. She has also worked as a weekend naturalist for Potomac Overlook Regional Park. Whitney has served on the curriculum committees and taught classes on Urban Ecology and Land Use History in Virginia for both Fairfax Master Naturalists and Arlington Regional Master Naturalists. Her interests include native plants and ethnobotany, natural communities, and environmental restoration. Whitney lives in Arlington with her husband Rich and 3 very spoiled cats. Ashley Stanton Ashley joined NVCT in January 2009 as NVCT's new Stewardship Specialist! Prior to coming to Virginia, Ashley received her Master's Degree in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 2007. For her thesis, she created a management plan for a floodplain forest on the Aldo Leopold Memorial Reserve near Baraboo, WI, and after receiving her degree, she worked as a naturalist at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center. Ashley also worked in the field for a year as a Restorationist and is a Certified Pesticide Applicator in Wisconsin. Since joining NVCT she has become an invaluable member of the team, conducting annual stewardship visits, leading restoration events, and creating a wide array of multimedia educational presentations. She is also an avid amateur historian, and looks forward to getting to know Northern Virginia better!
Bill Sain Bill has been a birder for over 12 years and has compiled a list of 600 bird species seen in the lower 48 States. He organized and led outings for the National Audubon Society chapter in San Antonio TX for several years, and also acted as a local birding guide for Victor Emanuel Nature Tours, a well-respected international nature tourism company. He has led monitoring studies of habitat restoration projects for the endangered Black-capped Vireo, assisted in monitoring/banding Burrowing Owls, and participated in a number of birding surveys over the years. Bill has been a dedicated volunteer for NVCT’s Floating Classrooms for 2 years, and we look forward to working with him again in 2009.
Martin Ogle Martin is Chief Naturalist for the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority's Potomac Overlook Regional Park, and has worked at the park since January of 1985. He graduated with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University (Fort Collins) and Virginia Tech, respectively. He has been on the Board of the Arlington/Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless, the Arlington Heritage Alliance and Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment where he was the Chair for three years. When not generously volunteering his time with NVCT, Martin regularly leads canoe trips for NVRPA, and iis a recognized expert in local ecology, energy efficiency, and environmental education. Dr. Pam Cressey Pam has worked with the City of Alexandria for over 30 years, and currently serves as City Archaeologist. She workes with the Planning Commission and the Alexandria Archaeological Society, and volunteers her time leading educational hikes around the city. This will be her second year kayaking with NVCT and we are very fortunate to have her expertise!
